About Me
I'm Stephen Gomez-Peck, an instructor of music theory at the University of Alabama School of Music and a doctoral candidate in Music Theory & Analysis at the Graduate Center, CUNY. My dissertation—titled "Form in Hip-Hop Music," advised by Dr. Mark Spicer—brings together historical, cultural, and analytical perspectives to explore how song form has shaped and been shaped by style in hip-hop since roughly 1987 (the start of the Golden Age of hip-hop). I have taught a wide variety of undergraduate courses within the "traditional" core music theory and aural skills curriculum at several colleges and universities in the United States and have plans to offer graduate seminars in hip-hop history and analysis in the near future.
I'm also a competitive long-distance runner. I started running during my senior year of high school basically on a whim because my best friend Dan and I thought it would be fun. It turned out to be really fun for me and I continued racing cross country and track and field throughout my undergraduate years. Since then, I ran with the student-organized run club at Indiana University from 2016–18 as well as Central Park Track Club-Tracksmith from 2018–22. I've found running to be about much more than results and competition, but my favorite competitive result is probably finishing 59th at the 2021 Boston Marathon in 2:27:46.
For a detailed account of my scholarly, pedagogical, and performance experience and ongoing activities recent as of November 25th, 2022, see my CV below or download it as a PDF here: Stephen Gomez-Peck C.V.
